Build Diary 8
What a crazy week it has been. Up until last week I honestly thought that digging a 40 metre long drainage channel into sticky mud was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but this week we well and truly surpassed our personal strength limit.
We always knew that building our house with our own four hands was going to be a challenge, especially when it comes to lifting and maneuvering the 6 metre long and 80kg heavy steel panels up on the roof. But we firmly believe that nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it, and so somehow we did it: We put the Garage/Office roof into place with four hands and one cheap ladder.
As can be seen in the photos, we used beautiful Meranti plywood on top of the steel panels, achieving a sophisticated yet warm look and feel. We then lifted and screwed the steel panels into place, put the roof sheeting on top and voila, we now have shelter from the crazy unpredictable rains. The next step is to trim the roof sheets to size and screw them to the steel panels so that they won’t fly away in the next storm (which nearly happened the other day, after having literally JUST discussed that it’s never windy in Bali ha!). What do you know…
Once the roof was on, we took a few days off to care for our battered bodies and nerve wrecked minds. The roof has been the most challenging part of the build so far, so it was nice to decompress for a little while before moving on with the next tasks.
Speaking of the next steps, we’re still in the process of returning the wrong Hole Borer that was sent to us all the way from Jakarta and re-order the correct one. Unfortunately in Indonesia, nothing is ever as easy as it may seem and so for now, we can’t start on the Bedroom basement just yet. Which isn’t to say we have nothing else to do, far from it.
We've also organised for our window frames and glass to be manufactured (we’re going for 6mm toughened glass which needs to be made in Denpasar), and the Twinlight Polycarbonate for the top edge of the Garage walls is on its way.
While in Denpasar, we also bought our very own motorbike so we can hopefully zip across the island in a little more comfort soon!
This is it for this week’s update, as always thanks for reading and until the next update….
