Masa Masa Restaurant
Located in a somewhat obscure area of Bali, Masa Masa truly is a hidden gem. Tucked in between one of the busiest highways on the island and the ocean, the unsuspecting visitor certainly wouldn’t expect a full fledged Colonial style restaurant brimming with Indonesian culture.
Sprawling over two levels, there is enough room to accomodate the expansive list of cultural offerings such as live music, independent film screenings, artisans’ table and Jajanan Pasar. The upper level features a lavish interior of dark timber panelling and exquisite Javanese antiques such as furniture, vases and batik, displayed across various dining rooms. The spacious balconies offer glimpses of the ocean just a short stroll away. Downstairs, you will find a modern kitchen & bar as well as superb shopping at Indonesian brand Pithecanthropus.
The menu offers a diverse range of Indonesian and Western dishes, served in authentic ceramics and even the placemats and napkins display beautiful Batik motifs. Try the Melayu-style spicy sour fish stew Ikam Asam Pedas, the velvety Sambal Terong Nyonya (eggplant with sambal), or stick to the classic Caesar Salad. Whatever choice you make, you own’t be disappointed. Wash it all down with a selection of refreshing Indonesian wines and beers and your culinary journey of Peranakan dishes is complete.
The atmosphere of Masa Masa is sophisticated yet relaxed and reminds of an era long gone by. Sitting in the open courtyard sampling dishes from different corners of the Indonesian archipelago while listening to smooth live Jazz, one could easily forget that this place is in indeed in Bali.
