Rainy season musings
Even though it didn’t seem like rainy season would ever arrive this year, it finally did with a bang. The skies are grey, the temparture has dropped to a comfortable 28 degrees and the daily afternoon downpours invite for endless cups of tea.
AN ANCIENT bath house
Tucked away in one of the small alleyways in Tejakula, a small town on the Norther coastline of Bali, is a traditional Balinese bath house with an intriguing history.
Babi Guling
Babi Guling is probably one of Bali’s oldest and most authentic dishes and definitely one of my favourites. Roughly translating to spit roasted suckling pig, this meal used to be reserved for special occasions and ceremonies such as weddings and funerals.
Central Bali
The central highlands of Bali are worlds apart from the touristy coastal areas in the South. The architecture and the people are more rugged, and the area is dominated by agriculture including citrus, coffee and chili plantations.
Temples & Ceremonies
The 40 year anniversary of Pura Dalem temple in the village of Petulu, Ubud took place in July 2022. Preparations for this festival lasted more than 3 months, involving the whole village including men, women and children.
Masa Masa Restaurant
Masa Masa Bali is a new Colonial style restaurant and concept store in one of the most unsuspecting areas of Bali. The focus here is on all things Indonesian including food, culture, and architecture.
Salt Farming, Tejakula
When visiting the North of Bali during dry season, something not to be missed is the traditional production of sea salt. Salt Farming is just one of several cottage industries in the area of Tejakula, with the final product being an exquisite salt that’s being exported…
Allawah House
After almost 18 months, our build in Ubud, Bali is slowly coming to an end. Since we moved into the house in June 2021 however, a lot has happened and even now that the interior is mostly finished, there is still a lot of work to do.
North Bali - Off The Beaten Track
The North of Bali is probably one of the most underrated places on the Island of the Gods. And I can understand why - after coming to Bali for the last five or so years, we never really went further than the beautiful ridge of volcanoes of the Kintamani region.
Lembongan Island
After two years of living in Bali, we finally made it over to Lembongan Island. Having heard so much about this sleepy little island just off the coast of Bali, we just had to go and see it for ourselves… And what can I say? We’re so glad we did!
